Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the most decorated actors of his generation, a performer who spent three decades methodically dismantling any ceiling on what a movie star was allowed to attempt. He broke through with What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) and went on to a filmography that includes Titanic (1997), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Inception (2010), and The Revenant (2015), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. His long partnership with Martin Scorsese and a string of collaborations with Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan have kept him at the center of serious American cinema.

On screen, DiCaprio has always led with an almost feverish watchability, a quality present even in his teenage work and sharpened considerably by age. The jaw and the eyes photograph well in any era, but what the camera catches now is something harder to name and more interesting to watch, a performer whose face has absorbed the weight of the roles and shows it.
